About Washington Sentencing Guidelines

Washington State uses a determinate sentencing system under the Sentencing Reform Act (RCW 9.94A). The sentencing grid provides presumptive ranges based on two factors: the offense seriousness level (I-XVI) and the offender score (0-9+). Judges must sentence within the standard range unless they find substantial and compelling reasons to depart from it. The Department of Corrections may reduce actual time served through earned release time for good behavior.
